The question, “Does ginkgo biloba help with memory loss?’ is perhaps as often asked as the supplement itself is popular. While some believe that there is no harm in trying the supplement, whether effective or not, here are some points you can consider if you have the same question in mind.
The truth is, even now, the medical community is still mostly undecided or, at least, have contradictory views on the efficacy of ginkgo biloba against memory loss. Different studies have been done, but the results are still largely inconclusive.
A study on a group of 45 and 70 year old subjects showed that those who took ginkgo biloba for six months had dramatic improvements in memory. The test subjects did not suffer from dementia but all suffered cases of age related memory problems.
There was another test that was performed on older seniors their ages ranging from 85 to older. These subjects around 118 in total were given a supplement. Half of them were given ginkgo biloba the other half were given a placebo. At the end of the three year period in which they took their supplement three times a day 1/3 of them had mild cases of dementia. So the supplement was favored but there wasn’t significant enough data to know for sure.
There are many reasons ginkgo biloba is being tested for memory loss. One major reason has to do with the antioxidants in ginkgo biloba. They contain flavonoids and terpenoids which help protect against free radicals. Our brain and nerve cells are vulnerable to these radicals if left unprotected can lead to memory loss. The other reason is because ginkgo biloba contains properties which treat depression which is a cause of dementia.
Another benefit of ginkgo biloba is that it improves the circulation of your blood. Circulation of blood is necessary for your brain to get the oxygen it needs to function properly. The side effect is that it can cause mild strokes or bleeding.
